AI Boyfriend Apps: Privacy and Security Pitfalls

Looking for someone to talk to? Or maybe you want a virtual boyfriend who is always attentive and loyal? If yes, then AI chatbot apps like Talkie Soulful Character AI, Chai, iGirl: AI Girlfriend, and others might seem interesting to try.

But wait! A recent report from Mozilla reveals serious privacy and security risks from these apps.

Your Data Becomes a Mystery, Privacy Ignored

Mozilla studied 11 “AI boyfriend” chatbot apps and found many ambiguities regarding AI technology, data source, information protection, and their responsibility in case of data leaks. Only one app (Genesia) met Mozilla’s minimum privacy standards. Worse yet, these apps have been downloaded over 100 million times on Android devices!

Not True Friends, But Dangers!

The Mozilla report says these apps are not true friends. Although promoted as mental health boosters, they can actually trigger addiction, loneliness, and toxicity, all while collecting as much data as possible from users. For example, the CrushOn.AI app can collect data on sexual health, prescription drugs, and gender affirmation treatment data. The Romantic AI app that claims to “take care of your mental health” does not guarantee therapeutic, medical, or professional help.

Security Claims Questioned

Some chatbot creators claim to protect user data. Replika, for example, states that it does not share user data with third parties and relies on a subscription-based business model. However, Italy banned Replika because it potentially “increases the risk for individuals who are still in the development stage or in a fragile emotional state”.

Be Wary Before Getting Trapped

It is natural for humans to seek connection and intimacy. However, be careful before pouring your heart out to an AI chatbot. Remember, they don’t have real feelings and your data can be misused.

The development of AI brings various innovations, including “virtual boyfriend” chatbots. However, it is important to be aware of the potential privacy and security risks involved. Remember, never share sensitive personal data with chatbots and make sure you understand the app’s privacy policy before using it.
